    Nan Boynton Memorial Gallery, FSU Art, January 2nd-30th, 2009

    621 Gallery presents Cultural Distortion, an exhibition analyzing cultural perceptions. Sarah Christensen Blair explores gender roles in contemporary craft. Jason Urban distorts perception with pattern and color in digital media. Min Kim Park challenges social taboos with large-scale media installations.

  • Person Place or Thing

    February 6th-27th, 2009

    621 Gallery presents "Person, Place, or Thing," an exhibition connecting history with the present through art. Artists like Inga Huld Tryggvadottir, Yoko Iwinaga, Sonja Hinrichsen, and Greg Blair explore personal memories, urban landscapes, and the relationship between nature and culture through various mediums.

    Lifestyle

    During their U.S. travels, artists Barbour and Jones gather objects and photos representing American subcultures. This exhibit offers a glimpse into diverse communities nationwide, encouraging viewer interaction. Join their Gallery Talk on February 5th at 6pm at The 621 Gallery.

    Showcasing pop art, deconstruction, and contemporary invention. Featuring artists like Alan Skees, Ivan Fortushniak, and Mark Mcleod. Glitter Chariot presents "All That Heaven Will Allow", a performance blending sweet melodrama with tragic elements, retelling the story of Ernie and Bert in a lovers' triangle.

    Rylan Steele explores the history of useful spaces through his photographs. Steele’s work reveals the expectations and inherent details of interior spaces, documenting facts and unearthing lived experiences.

    In January, The 621 Gallery explores the Culture of Conflict, with artists Carola Dreidemie, Michael Heroux, and Claire Rau examining media's impact on social interactions. Dreidemie critiques societal confusion, Heroux explores digital culture's influence, and Rau investigates war as entertainment. FSU Art Students League exhibits in the NBMG.

  • Connected

    February 1st - 29th, 2008

    In February, The 621 Gallery presents Connected. Artists Matthew Borgen, Jeff Eisenberg, and Charles Matson Lume explore the interplay of language, science, and history. Borgen reflects on historical perceptions, Eisenberg draws inspiration from science for spatial relationships, and Matson Lume transforms aesthetic experiences with light. Additionally, Randy Pulumbo exhibits in the NBMG.

  • Put Together

    "Put Together" features Charles E. Birnbaum's ceramic exploration of identity, Jeana Eve Klein's quilted reflections on memory and place, and Marcy Sperry's resistance to body modification in her imagery.

  • Primal

    In April, 621 Gallery presents "Primal," featuring Gabi Etenberg, Linda Frost, and Jane Hesser. Etenberg captures displacement, Frost critiques animal suffering, and Hesser explores primal humanity through animalistic imagery.

    In May, 621 Gallery presents "Industry," featuring Mark Abrahamson, Ira Hill, and Gil Scullion. Abrahamson's aerial photos depict environmental impact, Hill offers 3-D social critiques, and Scullion explores the fusion of traditional construction with genetic manipulation.

  • State of Being

    Kenda North from Texas photographs people underwater, evoking Marilyn Monroe. Insoon Ha's sculptures critique societal barbarity in the name of progress. Julie Anand, an Arizona artist with a background in Ecology and Biology, explores the intersection of matter and meaning through organic imagery and objects.

  • Physicality

    Ronnie Cramer of Denver merges electronic music with paperback novel imagery in video installations. Jason Scuilla from Sarasota creates large, passionate wood panel etchings on human interaction. Boris Shpeizman, a New York glass artist, innovates by integrating glass into unconventional designs, including lingerie.

    Prison Art: Inspired by Love

    North Florida prison inmates' art, like pencil drawings on cloth and coffee-dyed envelope illustrations, is shown at the Nan Boynton Memorial Gallery. Proceeds help the Inspired by Love of North Florida nonprofit. Founder Issac Williams presents, with FSU's Dave Gussak on Art Therapy. Vocalist Pam Laws performs, joined by Williams.

  • Bike-Power

    "Bike-Power," curated by Florida State University's Associate Professor of Digital Arts, Keith Roberson, showcases over 50 artists from Tallahassee, the US, and Canada.   • Southern Exposure: a Dean Gioia exhibition

    A solo exhibit of a prominent Tallahassee painter. Dean Dioia is well known through the region for his pensive paintings of the lush north Florida landscape including images of our canopy roads and freshwater springs.

    In this environmental performance, artists and a poet from New Mexico create live shows with sunset poetry readings and ceremonial burnings, surrounded by sculptures.

    Nan Boynton Memorial Gallery presents Marcella Stasa, a sculptor who uses found objects to explore the beauty she finds in death and decay.

    Janis Brothers of Live Oak, FL, uses interactive video to explore life and death. Denise Bookwalter from Cincinnati, OH, examines technology's influence on culture. Ryan Adrick of Jacksonville, FL, explores artist-subject relationships.

    In September, The 621 Gallery presents "Journeys," featuring local art professors' work: Tom Anderson's Kilimanjaro expedition, Tracy Longly-Cook's exploration of life's changes through photography, and Mary Stewart's prints on visual and ecological connections.

    Hands Off!

    Join us in the NBMG for Hands Off! - an international exhibition exploring possibilities in digital photography. Juror and image-maker Robert Fichter selected 30 images for this unique opportunity.

  • Juxtaposition

    Artists: Ron Yrabedra and Barbara Psimas

    FAMU Professor Yrabedra combines ancient iconography with American quilts in fabric and gold leaf. Barbara Psimas, sponsored by The Gem Collection, creates vibrant paintings and sensual sculptures from humble materials.

  • Identity

    Libby Rowe from Tennessee explores gender and taboo through art. Texan Jade Walker reimagines power symbols in textiles. Local artist Dom Guarneschelli blends self-portraits and vintage photos to evoke nostalgia.

  • Domesticity

    March 24th - April 22nd, 2006

    Christine Chin of New Mexico crafts food sculptures with humorous recipes in cookbook-style photos. Rebecca Sittler, an award-winning professor at the University of Central Florida, captures home intimacy with unconventional subjects. Donnalee Pond-Koenig, a well-known Tallahassee artist, creates mixed-media drawings and watercolors on special papers.

    April 28th - May 27, 2006

    Abstract artists Sarah Raulerson, Bill Humphries, and Michael Hunnewell offer unique perspectives. Raulerson creates organic sculptures, Humphries explores intricate details, and Hunnewell depicts urban landscapes with mixed media.

    At the Nan Boynton Memorial Gallery, Adrianne Little, a video installation artist from Buffalo, NY, explores trauma and ritual through video. She examines the maternal body's presence and absence, incorporating metaphor from nostalgic items related to motherly instinct. Little's work delves into her cultural and personal history.

  • Trainsitions: An FSU MFA Exhibition

    Summer is a time of transition in the MFA program. Second-year students finish their thesis work, while first-years become leaders. The show features contemporary works in various media.

    Julia Morrisroe

    Julia Morrisroe, an installation artist from Gainesville, FL, explores consumerism, originality, and ownership in her work. Using various media, including drawings and installations, she plays with popular culture themes, creating a sense of familiarity while exploring the tension between copies and originals.

  • Sense & Perception

    Holly Hanessian crafts visual stories from life's changes. Todd Bertolaet photographs endangered Florida landscapes. E. Brady Robinson explores play and repetition in art. "Excerpts" features videos focused on mouth-centered performance art.

  • Suspended Dreams

    Gary Duehr, a photographer from Massachusetts, captures in-between moments. Linda Hall, an artist from Tallahassee, creates unsettling images and sculptures. John Lytle Wilson, another artist from Tallahassee, paints colorful animals with human traits.

    Armageddon

    Our 25th annual Armageddon exhibition welcomes local and emerging artists' work without judgment. Held near Halloween, the reception is lit only by flashlights, with many attendees in costume, creating a fun and unique atmosphere filled with diverse artwork and guests.

  • Seconds

    This exhibit features emerging artists from Florida State University's MFA Program, presenting cutting-edge contemporary art. Artists include A. Light, Andrew Ross, Becki Rutta, Brad Williams, Catherine Morris, Jeff Crawford, Julie Guyot, Kazuyo Hira, Kegera Matthews-Lawrence, Phil Gleason, Resa Groff, and Tadj Dragoo.

  • Out of Context

    Randy Polumbo, a sculptor from New York City, transforms everyday objects into elegant pieces. Amy Fleming from Fort Myers, Florida, portrays urban salvage yards on scratchboard, showing consumer detritus as treasure. Jeremy Colbert, a sculptor in Tallahassee, explores symbolism using metal, ceramics, and natural materials.
