LAURA COLOMB
Her artistic practice involves painting and drawing in State and National Parks, capturing the contrast between their natural beauty and the violent history associated with them. I focus on sites near Jacksonville, FL, like Kingsley Plantation and Fort Caroline National Monument, where the oppressive environment evokes the suffering of displaced people. This duality fascinates me, and I aim to depict it through traditional landscape art. The land's impermanence, due to rising seas from climate change, inspires me to portray trees as sentinels keeping watch. This perspective informs my recent work, where trees and shrubs are depicted with a centrality reminiscent of Christ figures in crucifixion paintings, highlighting the connection to Christianity and colonialism.
